Mbarara DPC Jaffar Magyezi says he narrowly survived being killed by robbers while running an undercover operation in the night.
The DPC says he decided to go on the deadly mission after learning the methods of operation of the criminals in the municipality.
“I learnt that these people attack car owners while parking their vehicles. I thus went in and while packing a private car in a black spot somewhere in Nkokonjeru, they came at me with machetes,” the DPC told reporters.
He says he immediately jumped out and fired shots in the air and somehow managed to arrest 9 of them.
Magyezi says the arrested are part of a syndicate of robbers who attack and hack to death their targets in Mbarara and neighboring districts.
The arrested include Edison Kariisa, Justus Turyatemba, Juma Akankwatsa, Rameka Nayebare, Abine Johnson, Michael Akampurira from Ntungamo, Sulayit Muhanguzi, Nicholas Tumuhairwe and Brian Kakoza.
According to Magyezi, one of the suspects Kariisa confessed to have killed the Kirihuura CDO in Katete last month.
The suspects were found with axes, pangas, knives and hammers they use in their operations.
