The Opposition Democratic Party (DP) is willing to receive back all party members that recently stood as independents in the concluded general elections, despite the party constitution calling for dismissal from the party.

The party Vice President, Fred Mukasa Mbudde told the media at the party headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday that immediately after the Easter festivities, the party National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) will convene to devise means of accommodating such members that acted contrary to the constitution.

“The two party organs will meet to assess the state of the party and the way forward relating to the concluded elections,” said Mbidde.

The organs, he added, will come up with an action plan to address the key challenges facing the DP internally and also confront the current political situation in the country.

“The office of the president is particularly handling the task of reaching out to all members of the Democratic Party that stood as independents, to reconcile and bring them back to the fold of the party,” Mbidde revealed.

“This will be an exception for the party unity process which is paramount at the time,” Mbidde noted.

Meanwhile, Mbidde revealed that the party continues to stand in solidarity with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye who is still under house arrest at his home in Kasangati.

“This is no longer against Besigye alone; the Uganda Police has represented the potential of turning everyone’s home into a prison which should be stopped as soon as possible.”
