Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has criticized protests held at Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, saying such acts are not only disruptive but unacceptable.
“Whoever is mobilising their supporters to come and disrupt court proceedings should stop,” warned Katureebe.
He was addressing a press conference at his office in Kampala on Thursday.
The head of Uganda’s judiciary said courts need serenity and respect from the public to successfully execute their mandate.
Scores of police supporters held placards at Makindye Court to protest the trial of the law enforcement body’s commanders for highhandedness in responding to political dissent.
Gen Kale Kayihura and other police chiefs had been summoned to defend themselves against accusations of beating up Dr Kizza Besigye’s supporters in different parts of Kampala.
Some of the suspected police officers are facing police disciplinary proceedings while others have been transferred to different operation stations.
Katureebe said Judiciary would not tolerate people who “mobilise mobs to intimidate us while doing our work.”
He added: “We don’t need interference. Let the judges do their work.”
The protests turned ugly with police supporters threatening to beat up lawyers of the complainants.
Katureebe said he would discuss the matter with higher authorities to ensure such incidents do not reoccur.
