The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has sounded a warning to the public about the increasing rate of fraud in the country at the time.
In a notice dated July 29th, the UCC Executive Director, Eng. Godfrey Mutabazi says the fraudsters use automated online platforms, largely through messaging to defraud unsuspecting correspondents.
“Fraudsters impersonate subscribers with the intent of extorting money from the unsuspecting correspondent of the victims. This is done using automated online systems largely through the SMS messaging platform,” the notice reads in part.
The public has been advised to take extra caution and to always confirm the originator of any money related messages to avoid falling prey to such acts.
UCC noted that a number of people have already fallen victims of the said fraudsters and that the commission is working relentlessly with other stakeholders to combat the vice.
