Police have arrested and detained Nakawa Member of Parliament for Nakawa Division Michael Kabaziguruka but declined to give reasons why.
The Police publicist Fred Enanga revealed in a statement on Wednesday that the legislator was being held together with another person at Special Investigations Division, Kireka.
“The circumstances under which they were arrested are very sensitive, and although we cannot divulge any further details at this stage for fear of jeopardizing our investigations, we can only confirm to you that the suspects are helping us with investigations, into some very serious offences that involve other suspects as well,” said Enanga.
Kabaziguruka’s party the Forum for Democratic Change, whose officials for hours were unaware of his whereabouts this morning, says it has no information on what the MP is being charged with.
Mrs. Ingrid Turinawe, the party’s Chief Mobilizer told on Chimpreports on Wednesday, “We really can’t tell why he has been arrested. I think they are trying to intimidate him.”
Turinawe further revealed that since a ban was issued on the party’s Defiance Campaign, Police have maintained close watch on Kabaziguruka and pitched camp at his house.
“There is nothing serious which he has done that we know of; they must be trying to intimidate him,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General who recently withdrew his application for a temporary injunction on the opposition party’s defiance campaign has appealed this decision, asking the Constitutional Court to reinstate the injunction.
The court is slated to sit on Friday this week to hear this application and FDC Presidential candidate Col Dr Kizza Besigye is expected to attend.
