Benjamin Mbabazi, a staunch Uganda People’s Congress member was on Friday nominated as the Forum for Democratic Change candidate for Rubanda County East in Rubanda district.
Mbabazi, who was meant to carry the UPC flag for the Rubanda East parliamentary race was nominated yesterday by the Electoral Commission returning officer Francis Muhinda on the FDC ticket.
Mbabazi says he has been a UPC member for the last 20 years but decided on the last hour to cross to FDC after realizing that his own UPC party “is on a verge of extinction”.
” I have supported and worked for UPC for the last 20 years but I have of recent realized that it has no future and I had to join FDC ” said Mbabazi.
Mbabazi says he started preparations to represent his UPC party in Rubanda East County constituency, but was shocked early this week when he was told by one of the party officials that the party had no capacity to back them.
He says the official later advised him to keep on supporting UPC but contest as an independent candidate.
Mbabazi says he was perturbed and immediately decided to join FDC.
Mbabazi says once voted, he will strive to end the enmity among voters resulting from the rivalry between the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag bearer, Henry Ariganyira Musasizi and Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema during NRM party primaries.
Other candidates who have been nominated to contest in Rubanda East County include Achiles Byaruhanga and National Unity Platform’s Jasper Ayebare.
