The number of independent candidates vying for Parliamentary positions within Kampala has grown in comparison to those with political party cards, the Electoral Commission (EC) has disclosed.
The Commission’s Presiding Officer Fredrick Muwaya told press that independent candidates constituted nearly half of the 66 political aspirants that were screened and gazetted as candidates yesterday.
“Out of these 66 people, 2 are from JEEMA, 3 from ANT, 7 are from NRM, 6 from FDC, 1 from COSEVO (Congress Service Volunteers Organization), 10 from NUP, 2 from Ecological Party of Uganda or (EPU), 6 from DP, 1 from Conservative Party and 28 independents,” he stated.
“Out of these 66, seven of these are contesting for Woman Member of Parliament. The rest, that is; 59 are contesting for the nine elective positions that make up Kampala District,” Muwaya elaborated.
By this afternoon, the commission had nominated 12 out of the 20 aspirants that were expected.
