
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga and her deputy Jacob Oulanyah Lanywen are set to visit the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi where the National Resistance Movement Caucus retreat is taking place.
The two are battling for the top position of steering the 10th Parliament which commences in May.
According to the program in Kyankwanzi seen by this website, Kadaga is getting to the place today Thursday and Mr. Oulanyah who is returning from Europe will be there on Friday.
Kadaga is expected to arrive in Kyankwanzi at 2pm and present a paper titled “The A to Z of a Multiparty Parliament” from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
The NRM convened its newly elected Members of Parliament and the old members who were reelected on the on the party ticket.
The speaker and deputy are not supposed to attend the event due to the impartiality their offices demand.
The arrival of the two top shots at Kyankwanzi is exected to raise the temperature in the battle for speakership which has already taken shape at the retreat.
Campaigns have not been officially declared in Kyankwanzi but the place has been overwhelmed by informal votes hunting.
The teams of both contenders have been reported moving dormitory to dormitory and person to person.
While declaring her intentions to stand again on a local television early this month, Kadaga said her predecessor, Edward Ssekandi who is now the Vice President was given the opportunity to steer Parliament for two terms and that she should not be an exception.
Kadaga also said since other arms of government are in the hands of men, the legislature should be steered by a woman.
President Yoweri Museveni yesterday cautioned against campaigning for speakership which he sad was premature.
