A middle aged man in Masaka this morning committed suicide by burning himself inside Masaka Central Police Station.

The man identified as Hussein Walugembe accused police of impounding his motorcycle and demanding a bribe before handing it back to him.

The area regional police spokesman Muhammad Nsubuga confirmed this development while speaking to ChimpReports.

The police mouthpiece said Walugembe’s motorcycle number UDL 591R was impounded by police for “flouting Covid19 regulations.”

Local media in Masaka reported that the deceased was caught riding his motorcycle during curfew hours.

However, according to Police spokesman Nsubuga, when Walugembe came to the police station this morning and tried in vain to get his bike released, he decided to take his own life.

“He went out and bought some substance — we haven’t confirmed if it was petrol or not—and he returned to the station, locked himself in one of the rooms and set himself alight,” Nsubuga said.

“Unfortunately by the time officers arrived it was too late; they couldn’t save him.”

Nsubuga also dismissed reports that one officer was injured in the incident, confirming that Walugembe was alone in the room when he killed himself.
