Members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Southern Africa Chapter have distanced themselves from a man who appeared on social media in a video announcing that as an NRM member, he has endorsed Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobiwine as their candidate in the 2021 general elections.

Godfrey Balama said he belongs to the NRM Southern Africa Chapter while appearing in an online interview claiming, however, that he will support Bobi Wine against the incumbent President in the forthcoming elections.

Ismail Luzige, the chairperson of NRM Southern Africa Chapter, however, said that those were Balama’s personal views not for the whole group.

“We distance ourselves from him and the statements he made. We know him but he has been hiding in NRM asking for money so when we refused to give it to him, he launched a blackmail campaign against us,” Luzige said in the statement.

He also emphasized that as a group, they still stand on their earlier pronouncement of having President Museveni as the NRM sole candidate for the forthcoming 2021 elections.

“We know they are doing it because they fear the scientific elections as announced by the Electoral Commission but they should stop their blackmail,” he added.

Robert Luswata Nkangi, the NRM Southern Africa Chapter Secretary General noted that even though Balama donned a yellow shirt for the interview, he does not belong to the party.

“The People Power group got him and dressed him in our attire as a way of making political capital out of it. We want to disassociate ourselves from him and the views he aired out,” Nkangi said.

This has come at a time when Ugandans from South Africa are expected in the country any time from now via a repatriation flight.
