Buganda Kingdom on Tuesday marked and commemorated 50 years after the 1966 Kabaka Crisis an attack that saw the late Kabaka Fredrick Walugembe Muteesa II flee Uganda for his life.
The attack on Buganda palace was launched by the Milton Obote government killing many Baganda.
After a day long battle in which the army deployed tanks and heavy artillery, it became evident that the Kabaka and his defenders with their small arms could not hold the palace against the attacking force.
Fortunately, the Kabaka was able to elude capture and with the help of several loyal supporters was able to escape into exile.
However, the current UPC party leadership of Jimmy Michael Akena the son of Obote has told Chimp Reports that the party sees no reason to apologizing for the attack that was launched on the kingdom since Buganda was planning an attack on the legitimate government of Milton Obote.
“The UPC government just acted faster in reaction to the resolution by the Buganda Lukiko that the central government would be overthrown,” Michael Osinde the party Spokesperson, told Chimp Reports.
“History should be taken rightly; the Buganda Lukiko had passed a resolution to overthrow the Obote government and had acquired ammunitions from their UK supporters; it was incumbent upon the UPC government to act faster,” Osinde said.
Osinde noted that Obote never had intentions of attacking Buganda Kingdom since his relationship with Muteesa was never doubted but due to the influence of the Lukiko members that misled the King, Obote was left with no option but to defend his government.
“Obote spent two weeks after learning from intelligence that the Buganda was prepared to attack his government and upon advice from his cabinet, he took a swift decision that saved his government.”
“Any politician would have done the same save the government from being overthrown; had it been the NRM government, we think the effect of the attack would be even more disastrous.”
