Opposition Democratic Party (DP) has attacked the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government and security agencies over continued illegal arrests and detention of election petition witnesses since the Go Forward candidate Amama Mbabazi filed a case in at the Supreme Court

The party mouthpiece, Kenneth Paul Kakande told the media during the party’s weekly press conference on Tuesday in Kampala that such arrests are a clear indication of timidity from the ruling party and distortion of justice.

“We wish to condemn the manner in which security agencies are acting strangely by abducting witnesses; we are not moved and to us this is another ground to confirm that the (February) elections were rigged,” Kakande said.

“We have received information from the petition that many of the witnesses are being arrested while others are being abducted and some of the evidence they have is being taken away from them, indicating that the president is scared of the petition,” Kakande noted.

Kakande advised that if the elections were won in a free and fair manner; the judicial process show be allowed to do its work.

“We call upon the NRM government to respect the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and not to panic.”

The opposition party also appealed to all Ugandans to closely follow the petition “which is also aimed at putting to trial the judiciary and the entire electoral process in the country.”

“Ugandans must know that this petition is not about Amama Mbabazi, neither is it about Dr. Kizza Besigye but about the country Uganda; we therefore call upon all Ugandans to continue bringing in evidence that invalidates the 2016 general elections.”
