The opposition Forum for Democratic Change have announced a national demonstration calling for an independent review of last February’s Presidential elections.
The party says its candidate Col Dr Kizza Besigye won the election but the Electoral Commission announced incumbent Yoweri Museveni.
The demonstration was announced this morning by the FDC Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi while addressing press at their Najjanankumbi offices.
“We are going to hold a national demonstration on May 5th this year, demanding for an internationally supervised independent audit of the election,” said Mafabi. “We call upon all Ugandans to turn up for the demonstration in order to free our vote.”
FDC first called for an independent audit of the poll results in early March after they failed to challenge the outcome in the Supreme Court.
This was tabled as one of the other steps to keep the fire on National Resistance Movement and their candidate Yoweri Museveni.
The FDC President Gen Mugisha Muntu told press on March 2nd, “We demand the establishment of an independent audit of the 18th February 2016 elections. There are clear and glaring contradictions between what was declared by the electoral commission and what we have gathered across the country. This can only be resolved by an independent audit.”
According to Hon Mafabi, the May 5th Demonstration will be entirely peaceful and in compliance with the law.
“We are going to march from the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi to Nakivubo blue in Kampala and several other venues shall be communicated countrywide. We are this time complying with police by writing to them today hoping they won’t give us excuses.”
Nandala added that police will this time be allowed to determine the routes to be followed by the demonstrators as well as the venue if they don’t agree with the pre-selected.
