Police have arrested a former battle-hardened soldier to help detectives investigating the gruesome murder of police spokesperson AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Lt Godfrey Musisi, 52, was picked by a police commando unit from his residence in Namugongo, Kampala late last week.
It was earlier thought that Musisi served in the Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) that birthed Special Forces Command.
But SFC Spokesperson, Major Chris Magezi told ChimpReports on Monday that Lt Musisi has never served in the elite force.
“Lt Musisi has never served in SFC,” said Major Magezi.
Police officials refused to comment on the arrest saying they didn’t want to jeopardise investigations.
But sources told us Musisi was questioned on the killing of the high ranking police officer.
Three other people have since been apprehended in the probe.
Lt Musisi, a former operative with ISO, is no stranger to controversy.
He was arrested in 2004 on accusations of trying to assassinate President Museveni at the former International Conference Center complex, now Kampala Serena hotel.
In September 2005, Musisi was arraigned before a seven-member panel at the First Division Court Martial on three counts of treason, terrorism and conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline.
Prosecution alleged Musisi, with an intention to maim, disfigure, kill or otherwise, aimed a pistol loaded with eight live rounds of ammunition at the president.
He was also charged with unlawfully penetrating the inner defence ring of the then Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) with a gun, an act that amounts to treason.
But then ISO Director, Brig Elly Kayanja, told court the accused never attempted to assassinate Museveni.
“I deployed Musisi to the complex a day after the president went there. On the day of the alleged assassination, Musisi was not at the alleged scene of crime,” Kayanja testified.
The other two state witnesses, the then Director of Operations Lt Herbert Mugarura and Lt Musa Makubuya, the then head of terrorism/crime, pinned Musisi.
In his defense, Musisi claimed the charges were a fabrication. In its ruling, court said the state had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Musisi said in a recent newspaper article that the president whom he had served for 14 years in 2010 decided to pardon him after getting briefs that his conviction was fueled by a then cold war between the late Noble Mayombo and another officer.
In 2013, Lt Musisi was arrested allegedly for planting a bomb in a neighbour’s residence.
He accused police of torture in a detention centre.
Security Minister, Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde recently said Kaweesi’s killers exhibited “courage, precision and determination” which underscore their level of training and experience in executing such high level and deadly assignments.
