Four People Drown on L. Victoria

Four people have been confirmed dead after a motorboat carrying 8 people capsized on Lake Victoria this afternoon.

According to the Ssezibwa Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the motor boat was travelling from Nakalanga in Mayuge district to Buvuma

“Three bodies of the four who died in the accident have already been retrieved whereas the marine police are working around the clock to find the missing body,” area the police mouthpiece told this website on phone.

Kigozi identified the deceased as Ivan Malaga, 27 from Buyende, Noah Tenywa, 24, and Matia Waiswa, 21 all from Mayuge whereas the particulars of the missing person are still scanty.

“They were travelling to sell food stuffs in Katuba market in Buvuma market and we suspect the boat was blown by a tide due to the heavy winds on the lake causing the accident,”he added.

Kigozi also named Ojame Othieno, Annet Owori, Rosemary Athieno and a 10 months old baby as the survivors of the accident.

At least 30 members of a village football team and their fans drowned in December when their boat capsized on Lake Albert during a party.

The group from Buliisa district were returning from a friendly match on Christmas day in Hoima district before their boat capsized but according to police, most of them were drunk at the time of the accident.
