Security Operatives at the Uganda – Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border town of Bunagana in the western town of Kisoro on Saturday night sized seven guns.
The guns were impounded at around midnight by police officers who were patrolling at the border.
Hajji Shafique Sekandi, the Kisoro Resident District Commissioner says the weapons were found in a white a Toyota Premio registration number UAS 978B, .
The officers, he says, became suspicious after noticing concealed items in a dark part of the car.
The driver, on being questioned, leaped out of the car and fled.
The vehicle is being held at Kisoro Police station
Elly Maate, the Police Spokesperson for Kigezi Region says that six of the impounded Sub Machine Guns were fully loaded with ammunition while a PK Machine Gun had no ammunition.
Maate says that police also found half a liter of petrol and a liter of gun oil, which he suspects was to be used to clean the guns.
Police up to this point don’t know the intended destination of the weapons.
Maate says that although all the impounded guns appear to be from Uganda, security operatives have started investigating the matter to arrest the people behind the act.
Kisoro is currently experiencing rampant insecurity where several cases of gun-related murders and aggravated robberies have been reported.
This trend is said to have forced leaders led b the Kisoro District Chairperson Abel Bizimana, to demand for the transfer of all officers at Kisoro Central Police Station.
Locals and leaders claim that the officers have done little to fight insecurity in the district.
