Lawyer Eric Sabiiti, a legal officer at the Electoral Commission has been summoned by the Commission leadership to explain his recent actions in which he sought a court order to block Parliament business.
In the order which was granted by the Constitutional Court on Monday this week, Sabiiti sought to stop Parliament from debating or investigating the topical Presidential Handshake saga, where 42 government officials shared amongst themselves Shs. 6billion recovered from oil tax arrears.
Mr Sabiiti’s actions were described by the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga as an attempt to gag the House and an assault on the country’s democracy.
Sabiiti and the law firm which obtained the court order have since apologized to the Speaker and the petition itself retracted yesterday Thursday.
But Sabiiti still faces disciplinary action from his employers as we had earlier reported.
Chimpreports understands that the lawyer has since been summoned by the EC management to explain his actions.
He will be facing his supervisor, the Head of the Commission’s Legal Department as well as the Secretary to give his side of the story, not later than Monday January 16 next week.
The decision to take action against Sabiiti was taken in an extraordinary management meeting on Tuesday this week.
The meeting resolved among others, that Sabiiti’s move to file a petition against parliament was “rushed, reckless and wantonly disregarded the decorum of a public servant.”
“As a result, your name was widely carried/aired on various media, all the time bringing in the name of your (employer) whereas it was not party to your adventures,” read part of the letter that summons Sabiiti to give his response.
The EC officials noted that the matter had set the different arms of government at a collision course and generated acrimonious debate on several platforms.”
