Police in Mbarara are investigating a case in which to opposition politicians are accused of theft.
A local businessman Innocent Rugyero claims Buhweju Member of Parliament Francis Mwijukye and Mbarara’s FDC District Chairman Stanley Katembeya stole his money amounting to Shs 30m.
Rugyero, who owns Coffee Bar in Mbarara, opened up a case against the two politicians at Mbarara Central Police Station.
He told police that last Monday evening, the two FDC stalwarts called him at Grand Holiday Hotel which is owned Mr Katembeya, for an evening chat.
The businessman claims he had Shs 30m in a black plastic bag in his car when he went for the chat, and that he placed it under the chair during the conversation.
However, on departure Rugyero says he forgot the money and on reaching home he called Katembeya who denied knowledge of the cash.
The following morning he opened up the case at Mbarara police station and the hotel manager was picked.
The manager allegedly confessed to have seen the bag of money and given it to his boss Katembeya who promised to return it to the owner.
The manager was later released on bond, and Katembeya and Mwijukye were summoned to record statements on the matter.
The FDC chairman Katembeya hurried to police and recorded a statement but Mwijukye declined to respond.
When contacted, Katembeya confirmed to Chimpreports that the trio had an evening talk but that he knew nothing about the missing money.
The Rwizi regional CID boss David Ibanda confirmed the case and said investigations are ongoing.
Ibanda said Mwijukye adamantly refused to record a statement and that soon they might seek a warrant of arrest.
MP Francis Mwijukye was yet to respond to our requests for a comment on the matter by Monday morning.
The case is registered at Rwizi regional police under CRB 79/21/11/2016.
