The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof, Ddumba Ssentamu has annulled the suspension of 15 students who were involved in a demonstration against ‘poor meals’ in halls of residence.
The development comes after hours of strife at the university as students protested against the decision taken by the university management which they branded unfair.
The University on Tuesday suspended 15 students indefinitely for invading Mary Stuart, a girls’ hall of residence, destroying property including chairs, cups, plates, dining tables, doors, a fridge and causing loss of over 200 forks from the serving centre.
The university also noted that the students carried food from the serving centre and poured it at the entrance to Mary Stuart Hall, an act they described as contrary to the University Students Regulations 2015 and hence the decision to suspend them.
Students, through the guild leaders would later seek attention of the management concerning the issue which had already caused dissention at the institution.
In a letter dated October 26th, addressed to the Guild President, Prof. Ddumba said that the suspensions had been withdrawn to allow the university conduct further investigations into the matter.
“Following our meeting this morning between students and members of the University Management, it has been agreed that the Vice chancellor institutes a committee to investigate the situation for a comprehensive report which will inform further action,” Prof Ddumba wrote in a statement.
“In the meantime, all suspensions are withdrawn as further investigations take place,” the statement further reads.
