The Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Aceng Ocero has launched a Shs 544m Northern Uganda Social Action Fund given to 27 markets in Lira City.
Aceng, accompanied by officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and district technical leaders, launched the revolving fund on Friday at Lira City Council Hall where she appealed to the beneficiaries to put the funds to its intended purpose to spur development in Lira.
“Markets are the engines of development as a source of business and revenue generation for both the locals and the city council or Government,” said Aceng.
The Health Minister said she decided to reach out to the Office of the Prime Minister to help the people of Lira City, who are ready to engage in productive activities, but were inhibited by limited capital to venture into profitable businesses.
“In September last year, after seeing the potentials in our markets, I reached out to the Office of the Prime Minister to plan for our people in Lira City. I am happy to report that they listened to me and as we talk now, Shs 540m has been deposited,” said Aceng.
Aceng is contesting for Lira City Woman Member of Parliament under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket.
The Minister, who is currently an ex-officio MP without a vote in Parliament, has said she needs a full mandate to represent the people of Lira City and serve their aspirations better.
“I seek to go beyond my current ex-officio status to a Member of Parliament with a voice of the people and to speak for the people,” said Aceng.
Aceng, formerly Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital and Director General of Health Services, stated that she is ready to commit her experience, work with the population and Government to make Lira a great city.
“I believe that with my experience, exposure and working together with the population of Lira City and government, we can ably transform our city into the city that we all desire,” she said.
