Lawyers representing National Unity Platform (NUP) members who were arrested from Kalangala last week as they accompanied their presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu have petitioned Masaka Chief Magistrates Court to have their clients released on bail before the mention date.
The lawyers in the letter copied to office of the DPP asked court to issue a production warrant for Edward Sebuufu aka Eddie Mutwe and 22 others.
“In the premises we pray that the production warrant is issued for an early date to be issued probably this week on 7th and 8th January 2021 to enable us hear their bail application.” reads part of the letter.
The accused persons on Monday appeared before Masaka Chief Magistrate Charles Yeteise who read them charges of participating in an act likely to spread infectious disease of covid 19 as well as inciting violence with other colleagues
Some of them were released but these who had other charges like assaulting police officers on duty and malicious damage to property were remanded.
Being that it was getting late, the magistrate adjourned the matter to 19th January 2020 for mention.
Those on fresh charges include Stanley Kafuko, Lukeman Kampala and Hassan Katumba.
Its alleged that Buken Ali aka Nubian Lee, Edward Sebuufu aka Eddie Mutwe, Ntege William aka Kyuma kya Yesu and others on 30th December 2020 at Kibaale Village did an act likely to spread Covid 19 a dangerous disease.
Its further alleged that Bukeni Ali aka Nubian Lee, Edward Sebuufu aka Eddie Mutwe and Ntege William aka Kyuma Kya Yesu on 30th December in Mugoye Sub county, Kalangala District incited people to form a procession which could lead to loss of property and lives.
