The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon has expressed concern over allegations of serious human rights violations as well the diminishing space for the opposition in Uganda.
Mr Ki Moon according to a statement from UN raised the case among others, of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Bcandidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The UN Chief raised the concerns while meeting with Ugandan Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda on Thursday.
Dr Besigye who expressed dissatisfaction with the results of the February Presidential elections was arrested several times, placed under constant surveillance until in May when he was charged and remanded to Luzira Prison for alleged treason.
Ki Moon’s remarks follow the recent pledge by the government of Netherlands to engage with Uganda on the rights of opposition leaders in the country.
The Dutch government’s reaction followed a petition filed before them by a section of FDC activists.
Meanwhile, during the meeting with Dr Rugunda, the UN head raised more concerns about reported sexual exploitation and abuse, involving Ugandan forces in the Central African Republic, where they are hunting for the remnants of LRA rebel leader Joseph Kony.
He was however pleased with Uganda’s efforts to pacify Somalia and South Sudan.
