The Covid 19 pandemic, heavy rains and poor roads have reportedly affected the ongoing construction works on the Kabale Modern Central Market in Kabale town.

Construction of the Shs 23 billion Shillings market by the Chinese Chong Chuing International Construction Company started in December 2019 under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement program – MATIP III with funding from the World Bank.

The market will comprise of 859 lockup shops, 676 stalls, a medical clinic, a day care centre, restaurants and among others.

The two-year project was meant to be completed by December 2021.

Charles Mubuya the site engineer says however, that the because of the Covid 19 pandemic and heavy rains in Kabale had slowed down and could hinder the completion schedule.

Mubuya said the work is currently at 37 percent and is expected to be at 48 percent by the end of this year 2020.

Because of Covid 19 he says they reduced the number of workers to observe the SOPs of the ministry of health especially during the months of April, May and June.

“More so, due to the curfew, we were forced to reduce on the working hours, and we also encountered difficulties in obtaining materials as hard wares were closed due to COVID 19.”

On the other hand, Mabuya says a section of Ntungamo Kabale road collapsed at Kabalaga in the last month resulting in the delay of key material delivery like steel.

Emmanuel Byamugisha Sentaro, the Kabale municipality mayor who was also at the site to monitor the progress said despite the current challenges, the market will be completed in the agreed time frame. He added that Kabale municipal council is committed to supporting the contractors so that quality work is achieved.
