The Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Health Dr Diana Atwiine has asked all heads of Government Referral hospitals to prevail over their staff and curb the increased rate of absenteeism in these facilities.
In a letter addressed to all Directors for Regional referral hospitals, Chief Administrative Officers (CAO) and Town Clerks, Atwiine noted that from the recent supervision exercise she realized that many heath workers receive salaries but don’t work towards Government’s expectations.
“Most importantly during the same exercise, it was noted that health facilities have persistently developed rosters with health workers working an average of 12 to 14 days a month.”
Atwiine says this level of attendance to duty is unsatisfactory and is tantamount to cheating of Government.
“Therefore the responsible officers must review the current duty rosters and correct the irregularities as matter of urgency.”
She went further and urged these officers to take appropriate action on all those who have been absenting themselves from duty without permission from their supervisors and report back to her within a period of two weeks
It should be noted that many patients who have been seeking treatment in most of the health centre facilities owned by government and Referral Hospitals have been complaining of lack of enough health workers to attend to them.
Absenteeism was pointed out has one of the leading factors that has caused that problem in a number of health facilities country wide.
