Kayunga district party chairperson Moses Karangwa has said he will work tooth and nail to ensure her daughter, Jackline Birungi, who is an independent, defeats the incumbent, Idah Nantaba, and the NRM flag bearer, Agatha Nalubwama in the race for the district Woman MP seat.

The rivalry between Karangwa and Nantaba has last closer to a decade even when the two support NRM.

Nalubwama defeated Birungi in the NRM primaries on September 4.

But Birungi petitioned the NRM election commission, alleging irregularities in the election. However, the NRM tribunal dismissed the petition.

But Karangwa, who is the district NRM chairperson, insisted that her daughter’s election victory was rigged, the reason he is ready to support her.

“No one doubts my support to NRM and President Museveni, but I have decided to front my daughter to contest as an independent candidate for theKayunga District woman MP seat,” he said at Birungi’s nomination in Kayunga Town.

“I am not the first one to support an independent against the party’s official flag bearer and I even see some MPs, who stand as independents and later appointed ministers by President Museveni,” he added.

Birungi will tussle out with the incumbent, Nantaba Ms Harriet Nakwedde (NUP), Ms Margaret Nabirye ( Ind) and  Ms Lydia Wabuza (DP).

Birungi promised to become the voice of Kayunga District if elected to Parliament and vowed to always consult the electorate.

The divisions among NRM supporters in the area might affect the party’s support which it has been enjoying.
