The Zambian Government has issued a statement describing as false allegations that President Edgar Lungu provided financial resources to a Rwanda rebel group to launch attacks in Rwanda.
In a statement signed by President Lungu’s Special Assistant for Press and Public relations, Isaac Chipampe, State House refuted these allegations as false and “must be treated with the contempt they deserve”
“The Zambian Government and the peoples of Zambia and Rwanda continue to enjoy strong and fraternal relations founded on mutual respect and a common purpose based on shared values and principles,” The statement added.
While appearing before the International and Cross-Border Crimes on Monday, Maj Callixte Nsabimana Sankara said President Edgar Lungu allowed his NFL rebel group space to operate in his country to overthrow the Rwandan government and donated $150000 to the cause.
Major Sankara added that these operations were possible due the aid and money they received from Edgar Lungu.
NLF is a military wing of a Rwanda opposition political party, the Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change led by Rwandan dissident Paul Rusesabagina, known for protecting people during 1994’s Rwandan genocide as a manager of Hotel des Mille Collines.
Sankara has in previous hearings named Burundi and Uganda as supporters of the rebel activities against Rwanda.
The rebel leader is charged with terrorism, treason, incitement violence, murder and kidnap among other charges.
