Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) in Makenke barracks yesterday rested over 200 soldiers following their long serving age, health and inactive reasons.
The UPDF 2nd Division Spokesman, Maj. Ronald Kakurungu revealed that the function at which 247 soldiers were retired was the fourth of its kind at the barracks.
Ten of those who were released were senior army officers while only one was female.
The 2nd Division Political Commissar Aronda Natukunda who wished his comrades well in the civilian world, advised them to continue benefiting from the army circle and develop themselves through the government wealth creation projects.
He said the officers are free to join politics if they wish and that they can also be recalled into service if need arises.
“Uganda’s system does not retire you when are still very useful; in the mean time go out and help in government’s activities; in the fight against corruption and development efforts.”
Aronda also cautioned he retirees against bad vices such sexual misconduct which could expose them to HIV, as well as alcoholism.
At the event, the deputy RDC Mbarara Vicent Kamugisha advised the retiring army officers to remain disciplined during their life in the societies they will join to avoid arrests.
“If you remain well behaved, we shall treat you equally as citizens; but when you become violent don’t expect mercy, sympathy or lenience; we shall arrest you as criminals” he charged.
