Just hours to the inauguration of President Yoweri Museveni as Uganda’s president for the term 2016 to 2021, opposition Uganda Peoples’ Congress (UPC) has advised other opposition parties and individuals to push for a National dialogue as the only way to foster change of the status quo.
UPC Spokesperson, Michael Osinde Orachi told Chimpreports in an interview on Wednesday that with only hours left to the swearing-in of President Museveni, opposition can do nothing to stop this from happening.
Osinde said that the opposition boycotting or attending the swearing-in ceremony of president Museveni has no impact since it will take place anyway. He revealed that UPC hasn’t been officially invited for the function though its individual Members of Parliament were invited.
“To be realistic, what would be the essence of challenging the swearing-in ceremony, given on the other hand that the opposition which was in this case represented by the Go Forward presidential candidate, Amama Mbabazi admitted that they lacked enough evidence to overturn Museveni’s victory in courts of law,” Osinde said.
“The only avenue was through the legal remedies that are in place but the same opposition failed to adduce enough evidence to which they admitted; if anything was to be done, it would be done earlier but doing it now is causing turmoil in the country.”
“Failing the swearing-in ceremony now would cause turmoil; any aggrieved person should be conscious of its impact to the ordinary Ugandan.”
Osinde remarked that now is not the time for opposition politicians to fool Ugandans, but going back to the drawing board to prepare for the next election.
