The Igara West Member of Parliament, who is also the mover of the motion proposing the lifting of the Presidential Age Limit Raphael Magyezi, is calling for disbandment of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee for fair hearing of opinions on his bill.
Addressing the media on Wednesday at Parliament, Magyezi said he is worried that most of the members on this committee already have conflict of interest and are biased about the proposed bill.
Magyezi thinks some members will not give fair hearing to stakeholders who will appear before the committee to give their views.
He said he will soon approach the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga to request that she causes the party whips in the house to make changes in the membership of the legal committee.
The MP added that stakeholders deserve a fair hearing from a committee that is neutral, independent, objective and not biased.
“I think I have a right to express my reservations about those members who have openly come out in public to say they don’t support the bill and that they will oppose it; if you are a member of the committee you should have had the intuition to reserve one’s fears and expressions,” Magyezi said.
“But if you have come out in the public, if these members continue to express this kind of reservations on the bill, then they should withdraw. They should have the gentle or late the committee be reconstituted to have a genuine committee.”
Meanwhile, Magyezi is concerned about the many phone calls he has started receiving from his constituents asking money from him. He says the constituents tell him they heard that he was paid money from government to table the bill.
“This is all caused by the people that have featured such stories in the media that I have received Sh. 600million. I am now receiving calls since morning asking for money; this is due to the lies in the media. This should stop because it will tarnish debate both in the house and in the general public.”
The legal and parliamentary affairs committee chaired by west Budama South County MP, Jacob Oboth Oboth is set to start public hearing of the Magyezi bill on 31st this month with the mover himself to appear first.
Other members of the committee include; Vice Chairperson, Robinah Rwakoojo, Monicah Amoding, Wilfred Niwagaba, Anna Adeke Ebaju, Abdu Katuntu, Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda, Mathias Mpuuga, Medard Ssegona, Jackson Kafuuzi, Veronica Eragu among others.
