Prosecutors in the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) under their umbrella association, the Uganda Association of Prosecutors (UAP) today embarked on an indefinite strike over salaries and working conditions .
These accuse government of failure to address their grievances with in the 90 days they had provided.
In July this year, the prosecutors had a sit-down strike and government through Hon Kahinda Otafiire the minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs asked them to return to work as they looked into their issues.
These welcomed the government promises in an extraordinary meeting held on 17th July 2017 at Imperial Royale hotel, and resolved to give government 90 days to address the concerns.
Baxter Bakibinga, the chairperson UAP told ChimpReports this morning that the 90 days elapsed and they have never heard from government despite numerous reminders.
“14 days before the elapse of the ultimatum, we sent a reminder to a committee of cabinet handling this matter and Hon Otafiire but we have not received any response,” he said.
Bakibinga adds that being that they are united, he expects none of his colleagues to step in court today and adds that in order to end this strike government must fulfill most of the issues they brought before it.
He further added that in order to suspend this strike they will first summon the General Assembly meeting where members will vote on the way forward.
Most of the courts in the capital, Kampala which we visited like Buganda Road court and city hall, there were no prosecutors present. Court cases scheduled for today were being.
The prosecutors want government to increase their salaries, allowances, provide them with transport means and housing allowances
This follows comes short while after judicial officers paused their strike where they gave government up to 19th December to address their issues which includes salary increment, security, housing allowances and medical insurance among others.
