Police have released the Kamwege Mayor Godfrey Byamukama who in April was arrested for alleged involvement in the murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Byamukama was released on police bond from Nalufenya Police detention center on Saturday according to police spokesperson Asan Kasingye.
Kasingye clarified however, that the mayor is still being investigated for the same murder.
“The police bond doesn’t mean that he is free,” Kasingye told us.” “We are still investigating him, only that he will be reporting to us from his home.”
Kasingye says the mayor will be reporting every week at Kira Police station.
Byamukama was brutally treated by police officers during his arrest at the Ministry of Land offices in Kampala on April 5.
Photos of him getting treatment for grave wounds on his limbs shook the internet.
Under immense public pressure, police on May 26 arrested four of its officers who were involved in the arrest and charged them for the misconduct.
The officers ASP Patrick Muramira, ASP Fred Tumuhairwe; Habib Roma (driver) and Ben Odeke were brought before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Jameson Karemani and charged with torture.
These were accused of beating the mayor with batons and iron bars on the knees and ankles while arresting him.
