Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate, Joan Aciro has granted bail to two Democratic Party members who were arrested in Kampala city yesterday challenging constitutional amendments aimed at lifting the age limit of the president.
The two Democratic Party Members Hakeem Kiiza and Moses Mboowa aka Chief Mboowa have presented in court five sureties through their lawyers Asuman Basalirwa, Nalukoola Luyimbaazi and Fred Mukasa Mbidde whom court has considered substantial since in their application, the accused had asked court to release them on a non-cash bail of 1 million shillings each and have been ordered to deposit in court either their national identity card or passports with their recommendation letters from their areas of residence.
“Since counsel Basalirwa has informed court that he has explained to all sureties their duties then I hope they will fulfill them respectively and failure to do so you will face the repercussions,” ruled Aciro.
Kiiza has presented sureties who included Jane Namukasa, a close friend; Peter Muganga, a friend and Zahara Nalubowa.
Chief Mboowa has presented two sureties who included Sylivia Namata, a teacher and close friend and David Matovu, a fellow member of the Democratic Party and a village-mate.
Since the defense counsels have informed court that they were already served with all details relating to the case, the magistrate has set September 11 as a hearing date for the matter.
The duo is charged with Unlawful Assembly in City Square, Kampala city during the launch of their campaign dubbed ‘K’ogikwatako’.
