United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, a continental local government association in partnership with Transparence International Kenya have started implementing a project in Kabarole aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability and better service delivery.

The African running project is named: Leaders in Local Government for Transparency and Integrity in Service delivery in Africa. The one launched this week in Kabarole is “Kabarole Transparency and Integrity Initiative”

Charles Patsika the Membership and Development Director (UCLG) revealed that the project is focusing on continued performance in accountability and transparency.

He said, “In Africa three countries were selected to benefit from the project and these include Kabarole in Uganda, Walvis Bay Municipality in Namibia and Tema Municipality Assembly in Ghana”.

“Kabarole was selected following the past records and practices of fighting corruption and the district’s innovation of citizens’ participation through leaders’ conferences and consultations. This project would build a system in the district to assess corruption and manage the situation and Kabarole will be referred as a model in other districts and towns in Africa”.

Speaking at the launch of the project attended by councilors and technical heads of departments at the district headquarters in Kitumba on Wednesday, Gertrude Gamwera, the Secretary General Transparent International Uganda noted that in Uganda there is a challenge of strengthening efficiency in local government. She called on leaders to use the project to cause change in service delivery.

Richard Rwabuhinga the district chairperson called for collective efforts among all stakeholders in the fight against corruption and pledged to champion the program to realize better results.
