PS Diana Atwine: We Will Be a Little Harsh on Accountability

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Dr Diana Atwine yesterday warned local government health officials that she will be more than intolerant to whoever doesn’t give accountability on both government and private grants or funds.

The PS said the officials should expect her to be “a little harsh” when there is not accountability.

Atwine sounded the warning shortly after signing a MoU with the Beligium Technical Co-operation (BTC) to provide Shs 6 billion to the Ministry of Health to support the budget number of government hospitals around the country.

She said that since some of the officials had not properly accounted for the previous funds, they would not be sharing in this or any other grant untill they produce the right accountability or refund the money.

“We are not going to sign with some districts because they didn’t account for their previous grant. This should be a lesson to you all who plan to misuse funds,” she said.

The districts that were denied grants included Ntoroko with the worst performance, Yumbe, Nebbi, Maracha and Koboko.

“I am giving the districts 7 weeks to come back and show us accountability of the previous funds so that we can still sign with them. It’s sad that the health sector will delay its work because the money was used carelessly”.

Christelle Jocquet the resident representative of BTC urged all health centers receiving the funds to use them appropriately like it’s been stipulated in the MOU they signed.
