Day of the African Child: Kyabazinga Hosts Children to His Palace

The Kyabazinga of Busoga has hosted Children at his Budhumbula palace in Kamuli district as part of the activities to commemorate the African child day for the 26th year.

The day has been celebrated since 1991 in honour of those who participated in the 1976 Soweto Uprising against Apartheid policy in South Africa.

On the day, about ten thousand black school children marched in a column more than half a mile long, protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language.

Hundreds of young students were shot, more than a hundred people were killed in the protests of the following two weeks, and more than a thousand were injured.]

The day is marked every June 16th although Busoga Kingdom held the celebrations on Friday June 23rd.

Present in the Busoga palace during the children’s visit were Busoga Royal Chiefs, Ex Kamuli Governor (LC5) Salaam Musumba, current LC5 chairperson Kategere Thomas, Kamuli district councillors, Busoga Kingdom Ministers, Plan Uganda Int’l among others.

In his remarks, the Kyabazinga directed his subjects to desist from early child marriage, enroll children in schools, vehemently say no to HIV/AIDS and above all attain unity of purpose.

The function was also attended by students from Kamuli; both primary and secondary schools including parents and guardians.
