The Kampala Capital City Authority yesterday closed the meat section of Shoprite Lugogo following an impromptu inspection at the Super Market’s cold room, processing room and the shelves.

The supermarket was also found with wanting meat waste disposal practices, according to a statement that the Authority put out yesterday.

They also say they noticed failure by Shoprite to follow the meat hygiene codes and standards as well as poor wastewater drainage in the meat section which is a source of contamination.

KCCA’s deputy publicist Robert Kalumba tells us the Health team was tipped off by a customer who bought rotten meat from the supermarket.

KCCA says the meat processing at Shoprite Lugogo will remain suspended until the Super Market adheres fully to the required Codes and Standards of practice.

“We are shutting them down for us long as they sort this out, and if they do, they will write to us and our team will come back and inspect it before reopening them,” said Kalumba.

He added that the operation on all major supermarkets is currently ongoing in all city divisions to ensure that people buy safe and clean food.
