Uganda Police have opened up on the torture of the Kamwenge Mayor Geoffrey Byamukama, accusing him of accosting their officers.
Byamukama is bed ridden at Nakasero Hospital with grisly injuries on his limbs. He says he is unable to stand or walk by himself.
Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye in a statement today admitted the arrest of the Mayor in connection to the murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi. He had earlier denied knowledge of the arrest when Chimpreports broke the news early last month.
Kasingye revealed in a statement today that Byamukama was arrested on April 5, 2017, at the Ministry of Lands offices.
He says however, that the mayor tried to fight the arresting officers while he was being transported to Nalufenya Detention Centre in Jinja.
“After the arrest, two of our officers and the suspect got involved in a scuffle on the way to Jinja after Mr Byamukama realized that he was not being taken to Naguru Police Headquarters as earlier informed at the point of arrest,” Kasingye said.
“The suspect sustained superficial injuries in the process, which were aggravated by his medical condition which we cannot divulge here.”
Kasingye says the officers who inflicted the injuries on the mayor were arrested and are being investigated. He didn’t name them.
Reassured the police mouthpiece, “The Police has in the past demonstrated that it internally investigates and takes stern measures on officers who carry out their duties outside the acceptable standards and laws of this country and we shall do the same in this case.”
The incident has since sparked national outrage from with some leaders threatening to stop supporting the ruling NRM party.
Just recently another 13 suspects on trial for the same murder case cried out for court’s intervention, baring their scarred bodies to media cameras.
