Belgian football star, Romelu Lukaku is expected in Uganda in September this year in a drive to support refugees in the country.
The development was exclusively revealed to ChimpReports by Ugandan London based diaspora official, Mr. Moses Mulimira who visited Everton Football club and held meetings with the managers.
“I can now proudly tell you that come September this year we are going to have Romelu Lakuku in Uganda for the first time,” Mr. Mulimira said.
“I held fruitful talks with the managers of Everton and they understood the plight of refugees in Uganda and they willing to support identify talents in different refugee camps.”
During the recent East African-UK Health Summit, the Red Cross Uganda Director, Robert Kwesiga who also attended the event, told participants about the refugee challenges back home.
Mulimira who is also the founder of Uganda Diaspora Health Alliance, said he was touched by the story of refugees hence coming up with the initiative to explore talents within them.
“In United Kingdom many refugees mainly from Sudan and South Sudan who made it here through Uganda are known athletes and basketball stars,” he said.
The two times NBA All-Star, Luol Deng currently with Los Angeles Lakers, moved to United Kingdom as a refugee in late 1990s and immediately embarked on basketball career. In 2001 when he was 14, Luol moved to the United States to play at Blair Academy in New Jersey.
Another star coming from Everton is Ross Barkley whose grandparents are from Nigeria.
