Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Amb. Mull S. Katende has taken over as the chairperson of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the month of May 2017.
Katende was took over the office at an event that took place on Wednesday May 3rd at Hotel Des Mille Collines in Kigali, Rwanda where the PSC is holding its 10th Retreat to review the implementation of its work methods and the decisions taken since 2017.
Each if the 15 member states of the African Union, which include Uganda, chair the PSC sessions for one month on a rotational basis.
Katende replaces Amb. Toba Sebade of Togo who chaired the PSC during the month of April.

The PSC has the responsibility of maintaining peace and security on the African continent and is central to the African Peace and Security Archtecture (APSA).
During the month of May, the PSC will, besides holding a retreat on its work methods, consider a number of other key issues relating get to African Peace answer security in line with the Protocol that sets up the PSC.
Topics for consideration include an open session on Children and Armed Conflicts in Africa; undertaking a PSC Field Mission to Darfur, Sudan; and adoption of the Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism for Silencing the Guns in Africa by the year 2020.
