Busitema University Vice chancellor Prof. Mary Okwakol has closed its Soroti Campus following an unending students’ strike.
For the past one week, students at the campus have been striking over a number of concerns, among them mismanagement of guild fee, contentious elections for the new guild president and tuition increments.
The students also accused the University’s top body of remotely operating the campus.
“They (management) want this time round the guild president to come from main campus which is not proper,” the striking students said.
As a result of the strike, police was called in to deploy at the University premises located about 10 kilometers out of the Soroti town.
The Police fired teargas and rubber bullets to quell the student’s tempers.
On Wednesday afternoon students killed and roasted the university livestock, a situation that forced the University’s top body to close the campus.
Vice Chancellor Mrs Okwakol confirmed the University’s top management decision “until further notice.”
Okwakol told this website that the student’s behavior was uncalled for and threatened the university’s reputation.
The affected faculties include; Faculty of health science Mbale, faculty of engineering Busitema campus, faculty of science, Nagongera and faculty of natural resources Namasagali among others.
In 2013 Busitema University main campus was closed over guild elections and in 2014 students again went on rampage in Busitema main campus Tororo over failure by management to hold guild elections.
