The former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye has weighed in on the friction between the Democratic Party’s Vice President (Buganda) Betty Nambooze and the party President Nobert Mao.
Speaking to reporters at Desert Island Resort in Soroti town on Wednesday evening, Besigye denied involvement in the confusion now rocking the country’s oldest party, as recently blamed.
Besigye is being accused by Nobert Mao for creating confusion to weaken DP and taking strong DP people to his opposition FDC party.
This isn’t the first time Mao is accusing Besigye of causing confusion in his DP party.
In 2011 elections Mao accused Besigye for creating a cult of personality around himself instead of building strong institutions to grow democracy in the country. He added that, the Inter Party cooperation (IPC) failed because Besigye ‘didn’t adhere to the agreed protocol.
But according to Besigye, Mao’s statements are a mockery to him and are meant to taint his name bad.
“I don’t believe I Besigye can cause confusion in DP. Mao has just failed to organize his DP. That’s why members are fighting him,” Besigye repeatedly said; noting that, he has no problem working with any member of DP who is after change.
“There are people in DP who need change. So as FDC we are open to working together with them. The two DP factions are the ones causing mayhem to Mao.”
Besigye then proceeded to name Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Betty Nambooze as DP members focused on bringing change.
“Mr. Mao is now working for the regime and his statements against me should be treated as unworthy”, He said.
On the possibility of the Dialogue meet with President Museveni, Dr. Besigye reiterated that, he has no problem meeting Uganda’s President Museveni but that his terms and conditions must be met.
He also lashed out at government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo who yesterday accused Besigye of telling lies about being contacted by government.
In his yesterday speech in Soroti Besigye said that, he has been approached by people in government in possibilities of holding dialogue with President Museveni, Opondo dismissed as preposterous.
“The very people he (Ofwono) is defending are the very ones who contacted me. Ugandans must forgive Ofwono because he is talking what he doesn’t know”, Besigye said.
