Residents in Katete a Mbarara suburb have demonstrated this morning and closed down the Rwizi Lane Bridge over its current condition.
The locals organized themselves and blocked the road heading to Mbarara town, accusing the municipality of failing to rehabilitate the bridge.
The timber used to construct the bridge the residents say, has rotten and fear that their lives might be endangered.
The residents last year held a similar demonstration over the same bridge but no action was taken by the municipality.
As the situation spun out of hand, anti riot police was called in which dispersed the rioting people and removed the blockade.
On hearing this, the Mbarara Municipality works’ committee headed by the town clerk Munono Barintuma called in an executive meeting at the RDC’s office to find a lasting solution to the matter.
While speaking to the journalists afterwards, Town Clerk Munono asked residents to cool down promising that the bridge would be worked on in the near future.
