About 30 students of Immaculate Heart Girls School Nyakibaale in Rukungiri district on Saturday evening were injured in an accident along the Ntungamo – Rukungiri road.
The accident happened at around 5pm at Rwenkureijjo in Buyanja Sub County as the students, travelling in a coaster bus number UAZ 139P were returning from Kebisoni Sub County for celebrations, after winning this year’s Copa Coca-Cola ladies football championships.
It’s reported that some of the girls had their limbs broken and 3 of them were in critical condition.
The school had hired a Coaster bus instead of transporting them in the school bus.
Sister Gladys Kacoope, the Immaculate Heart Girls Head teacher said the accident was unfortunate but said most of the girls were out of danger.
In related news, one person has been confirmed dead and five others rushed to hospital in critical condition after a Fuso truck rammed into a Toyota RAV 4 along the Rukungiri – Kanungu road on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Herbert Niwagaba, a social worker based in Bwindi in Kanungu district and son in law of Emeritus Bishop John Ntegyereize; who has been the director of a local NGO, Opportunity Africa.
Elly Matte, the Kigezi Region Police spokesman says the accident happened on the Rukungiri side of the Nnengo.
Eye witness said the Fuso truck lost control after its breaks failed and rammed into the oncoming car and crashing it beyond repair.
The rescue team used axes to remove the casualties who were trapped in the car.
The driver of the Fuso took off after the accident and is being hunted by police.
