The NRM Electoral Commission has so far nominated a total of six candidates to run for the party primaries for the Kamuli Municipality MP seat.

The seat fell vacant following the cancellation of the election of Rehema Wetongola after her papers were found lacking by court.

Following the party’s issued road map, Wetongola was however duly nominated by the party Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi on Monday.

In response to concerns that Wetongola was illegally nominated for the party primaries, Tanga noted that, “Court only disqualified Wetongola’s certificates which she used from Busoga University; it didn’t temper with her O’level certificate (which she had not presented during the previous election) and that’s why we allowed her after the lawyers sat and cleared her.”

Odoi says when Watongola came this time with her O’Level Certificate of 2001 along with her A Level certificate which she got last year (2016), she was allowed back in the race.

“Once UNEB has cleared her having presented new documents of her O’level, we as electoral commission have no authority to stop her.”

He noted that the candidates nominated for the seat include; Rhema Wetongola, Sanubi Namusisi, Masitulah Namatovu, Samuel Walugyo, Cisor Lukalu and Godfrey Mwesije.

The party will hold primaries on March 20 after joint campaigns that will be held from 9th -18th March 2017.

Watongola is expected if she makes it through primaries, to face FDC’s Salaam Musumba who successfully challenged her papers in court.
