Three people have been killed in a car accident along the Mbarara-Ibanda road this morning.
The accident occurred at around 3;00am when the driver of a speeding Canter Registration number UAY 517D, carrying about 30 passengers lost control and overturned.
The Rwizi region police spokesperson, Ibin Ssenkumbi identified the deceased as Leonida Kiviri 43, Beatrice Nahabwe 28 and Innocent Asiimwe, 1, all residents of Buhweju district.
“The victims were travelling from an annual Christian Crusade of a prominent preacher Fr John Bashobora in Karaama in Mbarara District to Karungu Sub County in Buhweju District” Ssenkumbi noted
The injured were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Police attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving, saying the driver was trying to dodge traffic officers as it’s illegal to carry passengers on the back of the truck.
“It’s very unfortunate we have lost 3 people from Buhweju who were coming from Karaama for prayers; we have come in as leaders to save those who sustain serious injuries” said the area MP Francis Mwijukye.
