The Uganda People’s Defense Forces have come out to describe as “normal,” last night’s reshuffle that saw key changes in its top leadership.
The unprecedented changes saw among others, the head of the army (Chief of Defense Forces) moved to cabinet as junior works minister, while the commander of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba was also replaced and appointed Special Presidential Adviser in charge of Operations.
In a short post on social media, the Spokesperson of UPDF Lt Col Paddy Ankunda described the changes as “normal and good for institutional growth,” without discussing more on this view point.
Ankunda, who was yet to return our repeated calls for further comments, promised that an official statement on the reshuffle will come out shortly.
Among the eye catching changes in the shuffle included that of Brig. Peter Elweru, who was promoted to Major General and Appointed Commander of the Land Forces.
Gen Elweru who infamously commanded the raid on the Palace of the King of Rwenzururu in which dozens of royal guards were shot dead, is currently listed on a petition to the International Criminal Court, which if considered, could see him charged with serious crimes against before The Hague tribunal.
