Police have arrested the Prime Minister of the Rwenzururu Kingdom, Chimpreports has established.
Johnson Thembo Kitsumbire is currently detained at Kasese Police Station according to reports so far confirmed by police authorities.
The Police mouthpiece Andrew Felix Kaweesi told Chimpreports Thursday afternoon that the Premier was in police custody but asked for more time to be able to divulge the reasons for the arrest.
“All I can tell you is that he is a suspect like others,” said Mr Kaweesi promising to get back to us.
It is unclear whether or not police intends to add the Premier to the list of scores of other suspects who together with the King of Rwenzuru are charged with terrorism, murder, and treason.
Following last month’s clashes in which dozens of mostly royal guards at the King’s place in Kasese were shot dead by the army and police, government claims that Mumbere and his people have been among others been plotting to overturn it through an armed insurrection.
Unlike most of the leaders in Kasese who blamed the November 27 shootings on government, the arrested Prime Minister Johnson Kitsumbire expressed willingness to hold talks with government to come to the bottom of the impasse.
For the past two weeks, the Premier has been pushing for a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni over the Kasese problem, according to reports.
Mr Kitsumbire reportedly wanted to negotiate with the president on especially the detention of the their King Wesley Mumbere.
Most of the Kingdom officials have been calling for the release of the King from prison, as a starting point for the the deliberations to iron out the misunderstandings between the Kingdom and government.
There have also been fears among the royalists that the King’s poor health could deteriorate in Prison, where he has already been remanded.
