The National Resistance Movement Diaspora League has donated one ton of posho flour to the hunger stricken people of Isingiro district.

Last week the opposition Forum for Democratic Change party became the first political group to offer food support to the thousands of people in the Western district who have been battling a lengthy dry spell.

On Tuesday this week, the ruling party’s Diaspora league under the leadership of Patrick Asiimwe mobilized and sent food and 100 tree seedlings to Kakinga parish which is said to be the most affected area.

The food and the tree seedlings were delivered by the group’s member, Mr. Robert Kageme Nsubuga who represented Asimwe currently in the United Kingdom.

The donation was handed over to the sub county Local Council III Chairperson, Mr. Silver Mugisha.

Speaking at the donation event, Mr. Kageme said the adverse effects of climate change have significantly and negatively impacted on the food production in different parts of the country and highlighted a need to embrace forestation.

“Uganda has for long been the food basket in the region feeding people in South Sudan, Rwanda and DRC. Climate change effects are subduing our agricultural productivity and we need to plant more trees to survive,” He said.

“The NRM Diaspora league and all members are strongly behind initiatives like forestation and the President’s initiative of introducing solar powered pumps for irrigation and will look at supporting those plans to fight drought,” he added.
