Authorities have commenced demolishing some of the structures that were illegally constructed on Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Land to pave way for the construction of a state-of-the-art intensive care unit (ICU) worth Shs 8.5 Billion.
The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Health, launched on September 2, 2023, the construction of a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) worth Shs 8.5 billion at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Kabale District.
The contract was awarded to HASO Engineers Company Limited, and funding for the project was secured through collaboration between the government and the International Development Agency (IDA).
But ever since then the construction by the contractor has stalled, as private developers Charles Rwanika Majugo and Eng. Alex Happiness blocked the road to the site where the ICU is being cconstructed,as well encroached on most of the land, as they have constructed permanent Houses.
Godfrey Nyakahuma, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC), says that the works had been stalled for the last three weeks, after the contractor, while he was making the foundation, realized that most of the land and the access road to the site had encroached, so he would not continue. It was then that he had to leave the site.
Nyakahuma says, his office had to intervene in the matter.
It is against the above background that the demolitions have started.
Dr Philbert Nyeko, the Hospital Director of Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, says, that now that the encroachers, that had made the works to stall for the last three weeks, have been removed from the land, the contractor is to begin the work this week.
Dr Nyeko says, that the Hospital has lost some land to Encroachers, as he says, that as the Hospital Administration, they are to try to look out for the people, that have encroached on the Hospital Land and they reclaim it.
