Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, the outspoken Priest of Kitanga Parish in Kabale district has strongly condemned Parliament’s reported contemplation of tabling a law to legalize abortion.
Gaetano, while addressing journalists at Grand Holiday Hotel in Mbarara yesterday, said he was perturbed to hear that the members of parliament are soon tabling an abortion bill for discussion and approval.
The man of God says such a debate on the floor of a Ugandan parliament is a direct mockery of God’s authority.
“Dear friends of the world, we people have done almost everything but they cannot create a human being; the human life is a prerogative of God,” he said.
The said impending bill is reportedly being brought by government through the Ministry of Health as a way of combating maternal mortality.
He appealed to all the religious leaders to strive to resist the introduction of the debate on the floor of parliament which is said is not only against the religious teachings but also culturally abominable.
“Fortunately I heard the Archbishop Stanley Ntagali speaking strongly against it, so I hope other bishops are listening and have got eyes to see; please if you don’t want to speak for the people, who are suffering, let’s speak for God. It’s very said” Fr. Gaetano noted.
The matter has already attracted outrage from a number of MPs who include former Ethics and Interiority Minister Hon James Nsaba Butuuro who has vowed to fight it with all his energy.
